How We Came Together Hello. I'm Bokyung Choi, who was with Quantit for 6 months as an intern at the Investment Strategy Model Team. I'm majoring in Finance at Soongsil University and am in a master's program in Financial Engineering at KAIST Graduate School of Business. After finishing my first master's semester, I first encountered Quantit. I happened to get an opportunity to interview with CEO Duckhee and visited Quantit. At that time, meeting people performing finance business based on IT in a free atmosphere, I came to think of it as . After that, at the point of finishing my second master's semester, I saw Quantit's intern recruitment notice and remember applying without hesitation. In the interview, I was overwhelmed by various questions about finance, probability, statistics, etc., felt my shortcomings keenly, and resolved to aim for the next opportunity, but fortunately I passed and could go on a fulfilling 6-month journey together. Work Performed I could take on and perform various tasks at Quantit. I'd like to talk about two tasks that remain most in memory. First, investment strategy development. Quantit has vast datasets and has the Finter platform that allows easy checking of investment strategy returns and performance analysis using this. Also, you can easily find and implement , the foundation and core of investment strategies, based on research meetings, seminars, etc. Under such an optimized research environment, I could develop investment strategies and steadily strengthen them under team members' feedback to create investment strategies that far exceeded benchmarks. Personally, since I was very interested in implementing and operating investment strategies, I had experience operating investment strategies linked to real accounts alone even before working at Quantit. However, in the process of backtesting investment strategies, I omitted items like taxes, trading costs, and business day-based trading due to implementation difficulties, and manually added new data daily to do rebalancing. Since I implemented in limited circumstances, expected returns based on backtesting performance naturally had a large gap with reality. On the other hand, Quantit's Finter platform had the above constraints pre-developed, and accordingly, I could save costs including time and research various investment strategies derived from this. Next, data utilization. To be more detailed, I implemented and post-verified various factors known in the market based on corporate financial data provided by data vendors. Before joining Quantit, to proceed with school assignments, projects, or personal research, I only used data purchased through data vendors. As a student, prices of data sold on the market were absolutely not easy, so there were many cases where I had to give up data with errors or necessary but missing data with tears. On the other hand, at Quantit, by directly implementing factors and going through continuous monitoring and error verification processes, I could improve not only skills in handling data but also perspective. Besides this, by collaborating with team members through Git and receiving feedback, I could catch both rabbits of Git and Python. Besides this, I could perform tasks essential for solidifying the foundation of my future career, such as researching finance-related papers and probability and statistics concepts applicable to finance, book discussions and mock investments, and fund operation records and management. Pros and Cons I'd like to talk about pros and cons I personally felt while being together as a member of Quantit for 6 months. First, Quantit's unique advantage is . Before joining, what I worried about most was . Is it because I thought interns aren't focused on directly contributing to company profit generation but are positions learning the job? To me, interns' position and authority in companies seemed infinitely low and light. Because of this, I worried that the given 6 months might be recorded as times with no learning, pushed around by miscellaneous tasks. Looking back, this was unnecessary worry! Quantit entrusts interns with work required for normal company processes, gives them responsibility for this, and encourages them to actually perform. Of course, depending on disposition, this responsibility may come as a burden, but personally, I was satisfied that I could perform work as rather than . For example, in the case of factor implementation mentioned above, post-verification and error management of directly implemented factors were tasks equally given to everyone regardless of rank. Also, in the case of investment strategies, if they showed satisfactory performance, they could be tested and operated in external funds regardless of rank, so opportunities were always open to everyone. Next, the Investment Strategy Model Team's biggest advantage is . Despite being an intern full of unknowns and shortcomings, all team members of the Investment Strategy Model Team taught without reserve. Above all, the team leader had a plan to grow interns over 6 months. On the day I joined, the team leader showed the plan and said . At the time, it didn't resonate, but seeing them assign work considering intern growth potential, always leave feedback, and continue the intern process as planned, I felt . The team members must have been very busy and tired with piled-up work, but I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all team members who always worked hard for interns' skill improvement. Besides this, Quantit's advantages are endless, such as intern processes that can be combined with graduate school due to flexible work systems, vast data and resources, and the Finter platform. Then, what are Quantit's disadvantages? Personally, I didn't feel a single disadvantage, but if I had to find and write one, it would be . Quantit trusts interns' capabilities, so it assigns various tasks (investment strategy development, data implementation and verification, research, etc.) simultaneously. In my case, although I was busier due to combining with graduate school, there were several moments when I lived overwhelmed by work, continuing work at the lab until dawn after work when assigned work was heavy. Besides this, Quantit shouldn't just passively perform given work but must always have an attitude of being interested in and researching the market. For these reasons, you may feel , but if you're truly interested in and enjoy this field, it can rather become a stepping stone for growth. If I Recommend I think the talent most suitable for Quantit intern work is not but . Quantit provides interns with broad authority, so workload is also considerable. I think these are tasks that can be properly performed by someone who can enjoy, research more, and dig deeper, not tasks that can be finished by working hard. If you're interested in quant or data science, want to grow greatly through a 6-month process even if it's a bit beyond your strength, and have confidence and joy to do it, I definitely recommend Quantit over any other company. In Closing By working as a member of Quantit for 6 months, I could experience the job of buyside quant and build various knowledge that forms its foundation. Without Quantit, I couldn't have grown like I am now. I won't forget the grace I received at Quantit. I sincerely thank you.
